Chasing Trains Northwest of Harrisburg (Part 2 of 3)
Author: cinder

Thursday, September 21

The day dawned bright and beautiful, perfect for observing trains along the Juniata River northwest of Duncannon.  I apologize in advance for all the "wedge" perspectives as the topography limits my options..

1.  Mixed freight headed north on the "Port Road" as I drove along North Front St. (US 11/15) just south of the Enola Yard around 8:30 am..

2.  I highly recommend the Squeaky Rail Diner next to the Quality Inn Motel arcross from the north end of the Enola Yard.  Great food, service & value.  They have daily specials and their "patty melt" is to die for!

3.  Eastbound manifest on the Rockville Bridge coming out of the Rockville Yard.  I am parked along River Rd. (So. Main St) just south of the Bridgeview B&B along the Susquehanna.  9 am sunlight  illuminates the scene..

4.  I explored the higher perspective from the new Rockville Blvd., but had been forewarned for disappointment.

5.  A telephoto of a trainless Rockville Bridge.

6.  The sun angle was unfavorable for Duncannon (Cannon) so it was on to points west of that river town.  This is an eastbound intermodal at Short Rd (off Loshes Run Rd.which parallesls the tracks).

7.  Another intermodal east/

8.  Unit trash west

9..  More trash  What is the destination of this daily train?

(More to come)

10..  Mixed freight east at intersection of Upper Bailey and Lower Bailey Roads just south of Newport, PA

11.  Dpu on mixed freight

12.  Video of P042 coming east at track speed.  Note that this is the same bedraggled engine that led #43 west yesterday.  Nice doppler effect.

13  Same as yesterday ......#43 west around 3:10 pm at Cannon.  Similar (but not the same)  "scuzzy" Amtrak engine #122.  We'll see her tomorrow in Mifflin.

14. Westbound intermodal with NS, UP & BNSF for power on track 1 at Cannon

15.  What's this ?!  A second westbound intermodal on track 2 is racing the first out of town ....... and slowly winning.  Not really surprised ..... I had heard them both on the 113.2 detector a few minutes before, a few seconds apart.

16-18.  The race continues west at Cannon.

So this ends Part 2, 13 trains in about 7 hours trackside in picture perfect weather.  Part 3 tomorrow brings a couple of NS heritage units at Mifflin, PA.

Nice photos. Thanks for the tip on the diner. The doppler effect on your video was nice.
