FRA Warns NS to Stay Focused on Safety
Author: pt199

In the wake of efforts by a Cleveland-based investor group to take over the Norfolk Southern board of directors and install new top management, the Federal Railroad Administration is warning the Class 1 carrier to remain focused on safety.
The warning was made by FRA Administrator Amit Bose in a letter to NS CEO Alan Shaw.

The only avenue to ensure NS's immediate and long-term success is through a relentless focus on safety,” Bose wrote in the letter .
“Any backsliding, as a result of a change in leadership or otherwise, on the safety-oriented path you have laid out and communicated to us will likely attract renewed oversight attention from my office as we pursue our safety mission.”

The proxy battle to take control of NS is being waged by Ancora Holdings Group, which wants to replace Shaw with former United Parcel Service executive Jim Barber Jr. and name former CSX executive Jamie Boychuk as chief operating officer.
The letter can be found on the website of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board. From the akronrrblog

Remember when NS pride itself on winning the Harriman Safety Award years ago before PSR took over direction at the railroad?

Back then, weren't employees also fearful of reporting injuries or whistle-blowing so as not to jeopardize their Harriman Award ?

Yeah, I thought of that. Kinda funny, now they're going for a different EHH award, from Harriman to Harrison as the potential king of PSR. Which eschews safety for profit. Irony?

Very much so.

FRA should stay in their lane.  None of the RRs care about their strongly worded letters or suggestions or recommendations.
FRA needs to get off their can & pass some new regulations; otherwise they're gonna not have any new regulations since 2020 with the current bunch.
(The emergency breathing stuff was from RSIA 2008 & they're just now getting around to finishing that up; what a model of efficiency.)

I totally agree with this statement.

Calling the FRA a paper tiger is an insult to paper everywhere.

More like the JV cheerleader squad.
