"Blue" Trash to "Red" Landfills
Author: cinder

Judging from the "aroma" of passing southbound CSX freights yesterday, many cars on two freights were carrying solid waste (garbage) from urban areas to the north to rural landfills in the south.  And yes, the headline for this post is tiptoeing in the shallow end of the political swimming  pool..

1-3.  M301, with 512 axles and led by CSX "heritage" C&O unit 1869, indeed carries msw (municipal solid waste) in the green and orange containers as it crosses Cherry Hill Rd. north of Quantico, VA at 2:25pm...

4-5.  Following M301 10 minutes later was this unit trash train (symbol 731?) with high-side hoppers.  I say "trash" because that is how it smelled.  Are these hoppers in regular use for msw?

6.  Vandalized  formerTim's Rivershore Restaurant.  The plans for a rebirth of this former "crabshack" have ebbed with the outgoing tide.

The unit trash train was rumored to be a U157? originating at the Waste Management Facility in Jessup Md.

I thought these were normally run as an overnight Local but appears to of been a daylight run yesterday.

Further research has revealed that the unit trash train was probably going from Jessup, MD to Sealston, VA, east of Fredericksburg.  Here is a Google Earth image of the Sealston Waste Management terminus.  Note the balloon track for unloading.

I do hope Tim's Rivershore gets a new owner and can reopen.  It is fine place to sit and pick crabs and drink beer on the Potomac River, while watching CSX/Amtrak/VRE trains roll by.

There is concern that some municipal sludge waste contains PFAS and heavy metal traces. That is a problem when the waste is processed into fertilizer for food crops.

That's what's in the containers? Sludge from
sewage plants?

Probably  not sludge.  MSW = Municipal SOLID Waste ..... Just trash & garbage.

And the trash is turned into "fertilizer"?

Yes ... By selective composting.
