Fresh out of the Paducah shops
Author: srman

Built in October 1978 as SOO GP38-2 4412 it now sports a fresh coat of CPKC paint. Caught this guy sitting at the north end of the Paducah & Louisville yard in Louisville Ky. today.

Not sure why, but this scheme seems to look better to me on a shorter 4 axle loco.

Might be the larger proportion of Belle colors.

Nice catch. Look at all that new rail in the yard. Guess P&L is doing well.

Forty-six year old EMD still going strong. Looks sharp. I'm surprised they didn't add air conditioning. Then again, this is the CP.

Looks good.  Something different is nice as well.

Does anyone know if CP and KCS intend to use CPKC as a reporting mark?  So far the repaints kept their old CP or KCS marks and don't appear to have a locomotive renumbering plan.

Likewise, I dont know if they're planning to create a single scheme for train symbols.

Looks great.  I wonder if anyone knows why they just put CP under the number on the side of the cab?   Are some units just going to have KCS there?

CP 9375, the first locomotive painted in the CPKC scheme, has the CP reporting mark on the cab sides.  KCS 4805, the second locomotive to be painted in the CPKC scheme, has the KCS reporting mark on the cab sides.

I, too, like the looks of this locomotive, and I really liking the retro look of those numberboards (anybody know a name for that typeface?  Has it been used on a new locomotive since the 1980's?).  However, I am not wild about the CPKC lettering on the front of the CPKC locomotives.  Hmm -- I wonder how 'SOO LINE' would look on the each end of 4412?  ;^)

Very nice compact look to it.  The gold is a great touch, but I hope it ages better than the Golden Rodent scheme.  Some of those units look awful as the gold shows every speck of grease and soot.

I wonder if that CN unit behind it is on the way into the paint shops?

Most likey everything will stay sublettered for 7 years. Then KCS will formally fold into CP.

Seems more likely it and the redone SD75 are coming from MEI in St Louis.

Does Paducah do rebuilds ????

Has the CPKC created a new combined numbering system yet?   If they have not, they would need to use the separate CP and KCS initials to avoid the potential confusion of having two units with the same number under the CPKC initials.   Given the size of the two systems, there must be some overlap of engine numbers without renumbering some units.

I believe that the conversion of CN SD75's to AC traction involves two Progress Rail shops: some work is done in Mayfield, KY and then more is done in Muncie, IN. I assume 5707 is on its way to Muncie.

Exactly what I was thinking before I saw your post.

The scheme is a bit nondescript to me on the bigger six-axles, but in this case I like the scheme a lot better.

The CPKC reporting mark has not been approved.

To keep things simple, engines will retain their original reporting marks, just with the new paint scheme. CPKC is not interested in coming up with a total renumbering for 3 railroads. Waste of time and effort, rather than just putting CP, KCS, KCSM beside the number.

Even the 7-8 Tier 4’s that were just purchased from GECX, they will get CPKC paint but are actually CP locomotives.

CPKC is following in the footsteps of CN as far as the numbering goes.

nope, both are from Progress Rail in Mayfield,KY. The CN SD75I was stripped of mechanical components and is headed to the Muncie,Indiana location where the DC to AC conversion will be completed. The CPKC repainted Geep is headed back home.

National Railway Equipmemt in Paducah does indeed perform rebuilds.
