Eastern Railroad Discussion > CSX 1877 C&EI unit on home railsDate: 10/27/24 05:08 CSX 1877 C&EI unit on home rails Author: CSX2605 The C&EI heritage unit finally ran on home rails yesterday. The first photo is at milepost OZA 239.0 which is just south of Vincennes, IN. The track here was built in 1853 as part of the Evansville & Vincennes RR. To the far right of the first photo is where the Duncan Switch was located. Back in the day iced boxcars were spotted here to be loaded with melons. I've heard stories of kids holding lanterns so the cars could be loaded after dark. Between Oaktown and Decker was and still is a major melon producing area and the C&EI played a major role in getting the melons to market. Trucks began to take over beginning in the mid to late 30's.
The last two photos are at Spring Hill in Terre Haute, IN. This is where the C&EI/MILW/NYC crossed each other and the Spring Hill Tower located here and it was moved to the Wabash Valley RR Museum in Terre Haute and now stands close to the Haley Tower on the museum grounds.
