Sand Patch Foliage
Author: cinder

These pictures were taken two weeks ago amid the "height" of the fall foliage near the top of the Alleghenies.  Alas, it is an understatement to say the color was "muted'..  So yes, I have added a bit of saturation to my efforts.

1. Westbound coal empty enters the lower end of the horseshoe curve at Mance
2&3. Eastbound I-116 passes the Mance Post Office (which was recently sold) as Sunday afternoon ATVs await the passing train.  This previously early morning intermodal is now a mid-afternoon arrival at Mance..

(More following).

4. Westbound manifest climbs the curve at Mance.
5. Eastbound manifest approaches the former Mance Post Office on Sunday afternoon.
6. Eastbound I-136 climbs the west slope of the Alleghenies before passing under the highway bridge at Sand Patch.

(But wait,...... there's more)

7. An hour-late P030 approaches the MPO led by a "Charger".
8. A private dome car (Northern Sky) brings up the rear on this Washington, DC-bound train.
9. Trainless foliage.

(Last round of foliage pictures follows)

Nicely done. Looks like the maples peaked 2 weeks ago when you shot these. I was up there on Thursday for a short spell and eveyrthing else was peaking out as well. Imagine most everything has dropped or is dropping now.

116 is doing some sort of block swap at Connellsville which is why you are seeing them later. Almost everything eastbound except for 018, 136, and 276 get some sort of workover at Connellsville. Of course, all this can change on a dime and probbaly will once they finish the yard rehab in Cumberland.

While attending the 4-Guys Fire Apparatus 50th anniversary fest on 10/19, took a look around the corner at the Shaw Mine loadout.
The trackmobiles were parked and all was quiet, because a loaded drag had been postioned for CSX to pick up.
No power was on the head end, so not sure how long it sat there.

Very nice Autumn colors, not so much here in eastern PA with a serious drought and the first killing frost just last night. Global Warming?
Thanks for some very wonderful photos.
What's to become of the Mance Post Office? Sort of sorry for the Mance "Caboose". It looked like there were some great times had there over the decades.

The hot summer combined with the several weeks of little rain affected the color.

There was some color along NS in the Alleghenies. Many changed early and you had to be in the right spot at the right time. But not like past years.....

Nice pics!!
