Eastern Railroad Discussion > Erie Lackawanna heritage unit visits Lake Erie LandDate: 01/29/25 09:51 Erie Lackawanna heritage unit visits Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 Wednesday January 29, 2025
Vermilion, OH 39 degrees - sun and shadow A rare sighting this morning of ex Erie Lackawanna SD45-2 #3669 on the 11K with NS 4822 "Weight of the World" in the consist too ! EL 3669 was built in November 1972 as the first of the EL's SD45-2 order just over 52 years ago. Along the way it has lost its' 20 cylinder engine and now has a 16 under the hood, but it is as close as can be expected in the year 2025, especially here in North Central Ohio on the old Penn Central. Oh, and it has lost its' 3600 number, now being NS 1700. All the EL folks I knew never called them SD45's, they were "3600's". ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 01/29/25 09:55 Re: Erie Lackawanna heritage unit visits Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 4. - 6. What a sight ! As it was sunny, that gave me some good light, but it also produced some very harsh shadows. I didn't know which direction the "3600" was going to be facing, or which track, so I tried to be prepared as best as possible. I guess I could have moved faster and done a better job once I saw the unit was facing east, but I got what I got. There wasn't much of a shadow window to work with with four units.

I still remember in early 1965 when I saw my first EL gray / yellow / maroon locomotive and it made my heart race. Today, once again watching the EL 3669 pass by it raced again ! That unit sure does look good !! The consist was NS 4311, 4822, 4055 and 1700. Edited 1 time(s). I wonder what it's doing outside its normal Shared Assets stomping grounds in New Jersey? It would be great if 1700 returns East on 310 to Binghamton.

I wonder what it's doing outside its normal Shared Assets stomping grounds in New Jersey? It's headed to the shop at Elkhart, IN for maintenance. NS 1701 made the same trip twice last year. When Hurricane Agnes laid the Northeast's railroads low in 1972; EL was detouring on the Penn Central. I was driving to Sandusky along Route 6 from Camp Road to just inside the Sandusky city limits, where the main line turns away from the roadside, three EL units with a piggyback train in tow passed by. Complete with the bright red EL caboose on the rear. Four years later, on April 1st, 1976; I was riding with my father when we stopped at the Main Street crossing in Huron, Day #1 of Conrail, when three big EL units with another piggyback train and red caboose passed. Presumably, it was a train that started out on the Erie Lackawanna, but at around midnight, was switched over to the former Penn Central lines. I am sure quite a few more EL units made their way through here in the weeks that followed, before they were "CR'd" or repainted blue. |
