Eastern Railroad Discussion > Start of Howard Tunnel reroutes.Date: 01/30/25 18:57 Start of Howard Tunnel reroutes. Author: ddavies During the middle of the day, CSX 42 came east with M405-28. There were also a couple M408s after I left the Junction. Seems all of these trains are going to Cumberland (nothing passed the NS Greencastle cam).
Perhaps only juice and pigs will switch over to NS at Hagerstown, while the merchandise will go the long way around. I know where the howard st tunnels are, but no one has been able to tell me exactly what route these detours are taking.... What is the short route, or the "long way around? Im assumimng thiese are CSX trains trying to get from DC area and south to Phila area and north....??? Date: 01/31/25 04:54 Re: Start of Howard Tunnel reroutes. Author: 3rdTMRS I don't know the reroute, but from the photo I believe the "junction" is Shenandoah Junction, WV where NS crosses over CSX.

Date: 01/31/25 08:04 Re: Start of Howard Tunnel reroutes. Author: ClubCar What is amazing to me is that CSX owns the former Western Maryland Railway Line that now comes out of their Curtis Bay Yard here in Baltimore, but still goes up the west side of Baltimore, and goes on up to Hanover & Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, then on to Hagerstown, Maryland. This line is clearly underutilized in this day and age, and yes, I know that it is no longer signaled, and that there are clearance issues with no double stack containers allowed. But, to save money, you would think that some freight would be routed up on that line, and then could be sent over the York Rail Line to get onto the former Reading R.R. Line, now Norfolk Southern to go east to Philadelphia and beyond. I'd be willing to be that the CSX Management has not given any thought to doing this, even if it only a couple of trains per day. Thoughts?

Short way.....Hagerstown/Harrisburg /reading / Phila or NY Long way....Cleveland/Selkirk/north jersey.. HuH? How can so many ppl be talking about "the detour" without knowing where it is? Date: 01/31/25 19:57 Re: Start of Howard Tunnel reroutes. Author: ALCO630 pdt Wrote:

Author: WMF7A Last I was told when the Consol coal goes from Hagerstown to Harrisburg, it continues on the old RDG towards Phili. At a place called "Falls" it turns South, then heads back west on the CSX Phili Sub to Baltimore. In Baltimore it terminates at the NS (Consol Marine Terminals) port.

To clarify, the Consol terminal is joint access between NS and CSX. And unlike the CSX terminal at Curtis Bay, this facility is on the “wrong” side of the tunnel closure And therefore requires the detour. Posted from iPhone Date: 02/02/25 04:38 Re: Start of Howard Tunnel reroutes. Author: ShortlinesUSA Has Consol always been joint access? I haven't been up to Baltimore in a number of years but when I used to go up there kicking around the Canton I only saw NS trains at Consol.
Posted from Android Date: 02/02/25 10:27 Re: Start of Howard Tunnel reroutes. Author: DubyaM There is a CSX/NS connection track just west of both Bayview Yards installed expressly ( I think) for CSX access to Consol Coal.
And for John in White Marsh, don't hold your breath waiting for through traffic on the former York Subdivision so give it up. Wayne in Nottingham.
