Train watching spots from BWI to Reading, PA?
Author: SantaFeCF7

We are riding the steam train next Saturday out of Reading, PA. We will be traveling from DC / BWI to Reading on the 6th, and no plans yet for the 7th. Any interesting spots to seek out while we are en route or around Reading? This is our first Ramble trip and don't really know much about things to see out East.

Thanks!

If you want to see a lot of trains drive from BWI to the Harrisburg area which is only an hour and a half up I-83.  You have the Rockville Bridge and the busy NS Pittsburgh line.  There are other numerous photo spots west along the line close to the bridge.  Reading is only 64 miles east of there.

Go North from BWI/Baltimore to Harrisburg, PA area and check out the former "Iron Bridge" at Enola, PA. It is North of the yard.

A better use of time in this area would be to go up the road a little further and visit Keith Latimer at the Bridgeview Inn BnB (bridgeviewbnb.com).
His balcony has arguably the best view of Rockville Bridge, although there is a roadside pulloff about halfway between the Inn and the aforementioned "former Iron Bridge".
Too bad Strasburg isn't running 2/7, that would have been an easy diversion.
I would suggest exploring the R&N itself, a trip to RR HQ at Port Clinton may result in a visitors pass, perhaps you'll catch 2102 being prepped for 2/8.
If you just want to see endless NS freights in the Reading area, there is constant coverage on here from dschlegel, among others. There is a Railfan Park at Macungie, PA., between Reading and Allentown.

I'm hoping to see some Reading action on the 7th. I didn't know if they would bring the train down the evening/day before?

The passenger consist will be assembled and waiting in Reading Outer Station.  The locomotive is prepped Thursday, Friday and early Saturday morning.  Usually gets to Outer Station around 8am and is coupled up.  Good NS train watching spots in Reading area too.  Tuckerton Road btw Rt 61 and 222.  And Dosie Dough Bakery parking lot, Penn Avenue, in West Reading.

The suggestion for Bridgeview B&B is great for the Rockville Bridge. The former Iron Bridge site gives an overview of the North side of Enola Yard and the lines coming in from the North. See photos.
