Eastern Railroad Discussion > CSX locomotives heading offline?Date: 04/29/25 04:21 CSX locomotives heading offline? Author: JPB As captured from Virtual Railfans' Deshler live cam, at 2004 Monday 4/28/25 a pair of GE road units lead CSX Cincinnati to Syracuse manifest M560 at Deshler with an SD60M, MP15AC, road slug, and a 2nd MP15AC trailing. Limited web research suggests that the ex-Con SD60M 8759 has been sold to K&K Recycling of Pickering Ontario (corrected by ShortlinesUSA's post below), a steel pipe manufacturer in Plant City Fl while road slug ex-GP35 2347 has been sold to LTEX. I have no idea where the 2 MP15ACs are headed. Thoughts? Corrections?

Author: ShortlinesUSA The K&K for 8759 is K&K Recycling in Pickering, Ontario. It will be scrapped. I can't tell you with certainty about the MP15ACs without numbers but can say with a fair amount of confidence those are headed to LTE along with the road slug.

The MP15AC #s are 1174 and 1130. These 4 units seem too pristine to be scrap bait! Date: 04/29/25 06:09 Re: CSX locomotives heading offline? Author: engineerinvirginia JPB Wrote:

As much as everyone seems to love buttheads....they are geared so low they can ONLY be used in the yard...(We tried one on a local once when it got misdirected...it was SLOW...) Where we are now using ES44AC's for yard switching....these buttheads just don't have a lifeline.... Date: 04/29/25 07:22 Re: CSX locomotives heading offline? Author: CCMF 8759 for K&K, the others for LTEX
Bill Miller Galt, ON Date: 04/29/25 08:25 Re: CSX locomotives heading offline? Author: inrdjlg Just as UP's flock of GP15-1's has found homes among several short lines, wouldn't the buttheads be in demand for resale to various short lines? Whereas the Class 1's are more likely to use 6-axle power on industrial spurs, many of which have been beefed up to handle the heavier power, short lines still have a fair amount of lighter rail on their spurs, not to mention less resources to pay for upgrades.

You might think...and perhaps the likes of LTEX will get them prepared for such sale....if CSX was disposing of them they would not bend over to fix them up... but the buyers just might,,,,they might yet find a home.... These are more likely to find homes in industrial switching operations, probably leased not sold. Not many of these endcab switchers are finding their way to shortlines for precisely the reason you mention in your last sentence-- Less resources. Without traditional 4-axle locomotives being built anymore these more modern endcab switchers are highly desirable for lease/resale...for those who can afford them. An SD40-2 is probably a more affordable option than an MP15AC at this point. LTE dragged some absolutely wretched SW1500s off of the Reading & Northern last year that had been stored at the old RMDI shop in Pittston, PA for years, even having been through a flood. The shop had to do a lot of work just to get them in shape for NS to accept for movement. When talking with the shop folks along the lines of "Why bother?" the answer was that LTE said they can lease every SW1500 they can get their hands on. Posted from Android |
