Eastern Railroad Discussion > NS Detroit Autos QuestionDate: 05/11/25 16:08 NS Detroit Autos Question Author: train1275 Watching trains here in Vermilion, OH between Cleveland and Toledo, and I see the 11N mty autorack train everyday here, either passing through or more often than not making a pick-up at Fairlane Yard. This train goes to Detroit.
It used to be there were loaded autos; Train 10N, it would also do block swaps at Fairlane. That train no longer comes here, but is a Detroit - Bellevue train. However, when I have seen it arrive at Bellevue it looks like mixed merchandise up front with the rear filled out with loaded racks, but not really that many ..... when I have infrequently seen it. So my question is, for anyone that knows .... how are the Detroit loaded auto racks handled for points east of Toledo? Are there loaded autos out of Detroit that are run west to Elkhart and then broken up and block swapped for points east ? Where does 18N get its autoracks for Conway? Are Train 380's racks all out of Hegewisch or are they from multiple originations, and are they a solid block for some destination beyond Bellevue, or broken up to various points ? Thanks for any insights. .... and I guess while I am asking questions about auto moves ...... Intermodal train 22H used to move Tesla autoracks east through here. In the last month or so, I have only seen the racks once or twice. Are they moving in other trains, or just not moving ? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/11/25 16:08 by train1275. •GM Detroit / Hamtramck •Stellantis Detroit / Jefferson •Stellantis Detroit / Mack •Stellantis Sterling Heights •Stellantis Warren Truck All vehicle blocks on 10N are profled for reclassification at Bellevue with no through blocks. 380 departs Calumet Yard with a vehicle block off of the BRC. It then picks up Fords at the Hegewisch assembly plant. Both vehicle blocks on 380 are profiled for reclassification at Bellevue with no through blocks. All vehicle blocks on 121 and 181 are for points west as well as points south for 189. 359 departs the Detroit area with a run-through vehicle block for the IHB (relayed to 31M at Elkhart). There's also another vehicle block on 359 profiled for reclassification at Elkhart. I'm not sure if these vehicles go east, west, or south out of Elkhart after reclassification. I don't see a solid vehicle block on the outbound trains originating out of Elkhart, which probably means that these vehicles are mixed within the various manifest blocks going to their respective destinations. That, of course, was the routing back in my N&W days. Also many vehicles were damaged by breaking their tie-downs during humping in that era. |
