Eastern Railroad Discussion > Interesting illustrated Prog RRing article re: CSX rebuildingDate: 05/13/25 03:43 Interesting illustrated Prog RRing article re: CSX rebuilding Author: JPB Detailed, well illustrated article in Progressive Railroading describing the rebuilding of CSX Howard St tunnel for double stack clearances and CSX Clinchfield route washout repairs.
Progressive Railroading: CSX toils to complete two ambitious projects PS: The Jax to Curtis Bay, Baltimore I032 pig train, whose route has been temporarily cut back from its historic North Bergen NJ destination during the tunnel work, passed VR's Ashland live cam at 0420 Monday 5/13/25 a bit light on revenue with 12 boxes riding its 40+ mostly empty wells/spine platforms (4 Schneiders, 3 JB Hunts, 2 UPS trailers, 2 UPS containers, and a pair of 20ft gas cans). But it did feature the Monon heritage unit 1897 leading and a geo box car. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/13/25 04:08 by JPB. Date: 05/14/25 03:51 Re: Interesting illustrated Prog RRing article re: CSX rebuilding Author: ShortlinesUSA It's concerning how anemic the traffic on I032 has been and unless this haul was a one-off, it is declining. That leads me to wonder if a lot of the traffic is now just going to NS in Jacksonville from the FEC to be able continue an all-rail routing to New Jersey or, worse yet, is just being trucked.
The Howard Street tunnel project is badly needed but at the same time it may take years to rebuild the traffic after a year or more of being out of service and shippers finding other ways of doing business.
