Eastern Railroad Discussion > Coal smoke over BrewsterDate: 05/13/25 11:01 Coal smoke over Brewster Author: EL833 To twist train1275's Bellevue title, I paid a visit to Brewster, Ohio this past Saturday to grab a couple photos of the employee specials on the Wheeling and Lake Erie. Gorgeous day for a change in these parts, I did a few photos of the morning runs, then the noon run. A friend I've know for many years handed me some tickets for the 3pm run, so I got to wave at all the line side photographers (and there were many !).
First morning run. I wanted to catch 765 passing the Justus signals since they are some of the last older style along the W&LE out here. Inbound first run, again at Justus. That's where the W&LE crosses RJ Corman (ex B&O). Inbound second run with WE 7024. It sports a 35th anniversary logo. ...more coming Roger Durfee Cuyahoga Falls, OH Date: 05/13/25 11:04 Re: Coal smoke over Brewster Author: EL833 Outbound 2nd run at Harmon, Ohio
I photo I took from the same bridge back in March, 1977 On board for the ride behind the main office building (aka the brick) in Brewster. (on board photos will be just cell grabs). Typical leaning out photo :) There was a bi-plane following us, it made multiple fly bys. I dont even recognize it as the same. Thanks for sharing.

You are welcome. I thought both photos were from the same bridge, but consulted with some more knowledgeable Wheeling folks to be sure. Couldn't help but notice that your 1977 shot included N&W No. 2910, the only GP35 that the Nickel Plate ever owned. (As NKP No. 910, it was a replacement for a wrecked locomotive. NKP No. 578, later N&W No. 2578, was a similar wreck replacement, the road's only C420.) Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 05/13/25 14:46 by inrdjlg. I've been up in a few bi-planes, including a Stearman, but didn't chase any trains while up there lol. It sure has been a good here in Northern Ohio for steam this Spring. Date: 05/13/25 17:14 Re: Coal smoke over Brewster Author: inrdjlg The chief dispatcher at the INRD is looking at purchasing a bi-plane from a local guy. He claims that the licensing requirements are not difficult.

John Date: 05/14/25 04:23 Re: Coal smoke over Brewster Author: gcm Great series !
Nice to see the searchlight signals. Gary Date: 05/14/25 21:36 Re: Coal smoke over Brewster Author: ironmtn Great shots - thank you. And oh am I envious that I was not there! This either must have been one of the best kept secrets ever, or I was a lot busier and heads-down than I thought I was (and missed it on the variety of rail news sources that I read regularly) . I'm not that far away in western Michigan, and would have loved to see this movement.
Glad that it apparently ran well for everyone and was successful. MC |
