NS Crossing Strike and Derailment in Indiana
Author: inrdjlg

On Tuesday night, NS westbound (by timetable) intermodal train 26C was traveling over the New Castle District and struck a highway steam roller south of Hartford City, Indiana, at the County Road 300 South crossing.  The train reportedly derailed, but apparently no injuries were reported.  No other details, such as was it a direct hit or a glancing blow, as well as was it just the lead unit's wheels or the power and several cars behind it.

Steam roller? That sounds like a big piece of equipment. Keep us posted.

Not much on the 'net about this. There's a trucking co. next to the crossing on 300 South. Might the steam roller have been headed there?

Thanks,

Hardly a steam roller.

How do you know? Do you have more information or photos? It may not be huge, but I suppose it is heavy and ride high.

Looks like box trucks there. Not seeing a mention in local media (Hartford City is a small town so it may have got missed in the Muncie / Indianapolis news region).
The sheriff department says "paving equipment".

OK lets be clear, are there REALLY and "steam rollers" in the USA that are functional, let alone with certified boilers? Probably more like a large diesel powered HEAVY pavement roller.

I found this on the intenet Jack:

A "highway steam roller" refers to a specific type of heavy construction machinery used for compacting and leveling roads, primarily asphalt. While the term "steamroller" evokes images of steam-powered machines, modern highway rollers are almost always diesel-powered, though the name persists.
