CSX local in last light and irrigating the spuds
Author: CSX2605

With the most daylight this time of year it is possible to catch the local, CSX L371, leaving Alice yard in Vincennes, IN. The local alternates going north and south to work so on Thursday night L371 is going south to Princeton to work the grain elevator and Berry Plastics. I moved the irrigation sprinklers in the potato field and set up in hopes of getting the local in the very last light. I shot some video of the sprinklers as the sun was setting. They get moved every 3 hours to the next valve. Finally in the last light L371 left Alice charging south towards Princeton. Later that night around 3 am M513 passed by with the heritage unit P&LE mid train DPU. There's something about the calm, heavy night air and the odors of a train as it rolls by like lumber loads, soybean meal in hoppers and even scrap metal in open gondolas. I seen on YouTube where the P&LE was leading a train Saturday in Memphis to UP's Sargent Yard.

Love the sound of the irrigation sprinklers combined with the evening glow and the approaching local!  I swear I could smell the wet vegetation and the diesel exhaust!

I really like what you did here. It captures the vibe of early summer in the Upper Midwest really well.

One of the best videos on TO’s, hands down! Like others said, the sound and sight of the potato irrigation sprinklers at sunset sets the stage for the oncoming train. As it passes by, the horn blows and the rhythmic passing of the local fades as the sprinklers carry on at the end with the signal turning red in a most satisfying sequence. Well done, CSX 2605!!
