Must admit that I've never seen a BNSF freight train go into Union Station. However, I have seen freight trains eastbound on the Burlington "East End" on main track 2. Date: 06/29/25 17:09 Re: Freight on Main 2 going into Chicago Union Station from the B Author: zchcsse I just saw a photo from "MH Tower" on Railstream's Facebook page that showed a freight train (covered hoppers) on one of the tracks that go into Union Station. No photos of the power on the train, and the train is on a track that would not allow it to connect to NS directly.
Is this something running through the station to CPKC??? Date: 06/29/25 19:43 Re: Freight on Main 2 going into Chicago Union Station from the B Author: kevink Per Mr. MH Tower’s post on a local Facebook group, train was staged south of CUS due to tie replacement operations on the BNSF Chicago Sub west of Canal Street. It was only there about an hour before it moved to Western Avenue Yard.

Speaking of tie replacements, lots and LOTS of new ties have been off loaded through Lagrange to and past Hinsdale, on Main Track 1. All the old ties have been marked for replacement. Wonder when the replacement work will begin. Metra reporting > delays on BNSF to evening trains on 6/29 and 6/30 Wonder how far east they started? They haven't progressed to Western Springs yet. Disturbing that much track structure. Will cause all kinds of sun kinks Posted from iPhone Date: 07/03/25 09:51 Re: Freight on Main 2 going into Chicago Union Station from the B Author: HotWater farmer Wrote:

I assume you have many years experience in such work, to make such a statement. Date: 07/03/25 12:23 Re: Freight on Main 2 going into Chicago Union Station from the B Author: farmer HotWater Wrote:

Yes 20 plus years at CSX track department. I’ve seen tie units installing ties. With rail temps well over a hundred. Then taking all hours of darkness trying to get track useable. However, having lived along the Burlington "East End" for more than 50 years, I've seen them conduct all sorts of rail & tie replacements on the three main tracks without any "sun kinks". I'm sure between all the BN/BNSF freights, Amtrak Trains, and Metra commuter trains, with speeds to 79MPH, those BNSF MoW crews MUST know what the hell they are doing. |
