A Little Action Lake Erie Land
Author: train1275

Saturday July 5, 2025
Vermilion, OH
Sunny and HOT, Temps in the mid to high 80's

We ended up staying close to home today, so we got out for just a short time to catch a little action.

1 - 3.  Train 28B is caught on the NKP between Vermilion and Lorain at Beaver Park Marina this morning with BNSF 7346 and 7072 leading.

Vermilion is where the Lake Shore Line of the New York Central and the Nickel Plate come up to Lake Erie and cross each other. The Lake Shore then dives southeasterly to Amherst while the NKP comes north and skirts the shore of Lake Erie for a few miles before entering Lorain and crossing the Black River. We get the best of both worlds here, the rail traffic off both lines, and lake with the lake freighters. Just to the southwest begins the flat but fertile rural Ohio farm fields. To our east begins the sprawl to Cleveland ... "the big City".

4. More action on the NKP side as Train 315 comes west from Conneaut with NS 4144 solo up front and NS 7638 as mid-train DPU. This is "GC" at Coen Road west of town, and that is the east-leg connector to the left in Image 4 which connects over to the Lake Shore line, a "Conrail break up" addition which did not exist in NKP / NYC or N&W / PC days.

7. & 8.  I've been seeing lots of auto racks moving the last 6 - 8 weeks. Here are autos in 315, and when the 315 cleared Coen Road crossing the 11N was noted moving mty racks west over on the Lake Shore line.

9. A brief stop at the Vermilion docks as Train 265 from Ayer, MA comes west on the Lake Shore line with NS 4609 and 1133. About a mile and a half east of here there was a tree down over all three tracks (the siding ends at CP 219) and 265 hit it. They stopped just before the River Road Crossing, to the east of the bridge here to inspect. Finding no damage they have just restarted, and on their way west to Chicago. Clouds are rolling in now.

**  after supper additions

So we went out after dinner hearing that a 2nd 315 was coming west on the NKP. I suspect the first one was actually yesterdays train ?

Anyway, the Vermilion River bridge down at the docks was lit nice for a westbound so we staked out. Once again it was somewhat of a long wait, but finally the train came as the heavy shadows were moving in quickly. About time, as I don't think we had but a few more minutes. The light was very harsh.

11. While waiting, a tow boat came down the river under the bridge.

12. And now the 315 with BNSF 6389 and 7412 brightly lit up comes past. He'll head in at Shinrock up ahead so 17N can go around him (coming off the Lake Shore line via the connector), and maybe a meet with 316 who is still trying to get out, and we are hearing a 258 intermodal is also in the mix (mess) but we'll go home and end the day here in Lake Erie Land.

What are the fish that are in there? Appreciate all your bird shots as well as the trains.
