CSX to report earnings after the market closes on July 23rd.  Top management probably has an idea of close the numbers will be.  Is this a ploy by leadership telling the investment community numbers aren't what they should be, so we're being proactive.  Been down this same road with another company.

We get management top heavy often.....they weed them out...then hire them back....lather rinse repeat.

CSX acquired Pan Am for approximately $601 million.  Plus another $100 million in track, terminal and yard improvements.  One wonders when the return on investment will be when reporting on earnings to stockholders.  What new business can be brought in above and beyond what was there at the onset in June of 2022 to generate more revenue for the overall CSX system to justify the cost of buying and rebuilding the railroad.

The general consensus in former Pan Am territory is that CSX's long-term goal was to capture international containers coming from eastern Canadian ports.  I can't possibly see what else would justify spending close to a billion dollars once its all said and done.

When CSX got a massive windfall from its deal to sell its right of way in Virginia to the state for passenger use, under IRS rules the railroad was able to get a huge tax break if it invested that money within a certain timeframe. That investment was Pan Am. So the acquisition was driven partly by the need to find a home for that money to reduce the railroad's tax liability.

Employees? Absolutely.    Foamers like you?   You will see more dead trains sitting around I guess, although I am not sure you would be able to tell the difference.

Thank you for that piece of interesting information.

From afar, we frequently do not  know all of the factors that go into a decision.

Craft employees.  When CSX consolidated in Jacksonville in 2018, all the offices were still separated.  Dispatchers were kept on the divisions that they came down with, and with a couple of exceptions, could not move between divisions.  As of July 5th, the nine divisions became 4 regions, and per the contract you only need one ACD on each shift for each "office".  The Chicago, Great Lakes and Louisville divisions are now just the Midwest Region.   So if you are T&E in Detroit trying to get ahold of the chief, you are now waiting in line with someone in Chicago, Toledo, Indy, St Louis, Cincy, Cleveland, or any other of the smaller crew change points in between. Or waiting for the chief to get off the phone with customer service because the BRC is incapable of sending a correct consist, and the crew at Clearing that has been on duty for 6 hours has an incorrect work order.   Or one of the other 1000s of jobs he/she has to do that management doesn't know they do.


But don't worry, according to DutchDragon in his "expert" opinion, no one will notice.....

Always remember there are two sides to a pancake and usually two sides to a story or an agenda/argument. Or finally spin the story to fit your narrative.

As usual the WHOLE story isn’t being reported. Yes it is true there were several contract chief positions eliminated. However, what isn’t mentioned is the contract positions eliminated were replaced with non-agreement positions. The thought process in making this decision was the contract chief would focus on crew balancing, ensuring delays and general paperwork were accurately and timely reported into the systems, making necessary notifications when issues arise. The non-agreeement Manager of Network of Operations would be more focused on the overall dispatching and keeping a better eye on the dispatchers.

Now we can all have an open debate with all the facts.

This was the story told me by our first trick dispatcher....and it was his thinking that CSX wanted all DECISIONS to be made by management.....of course thats foolhardy...rail management hired off the street does not know how to railroad...

On the sale to Virginia, purchase of Pan Am.

The IRS allows a series of like kind exchanges to take place if you sell and buy "similar" properties. The advantage is you defer taxes on your profits in the first deal. But you retain basis. You pay taxes when you sell the last property and don't replace it.

One of the nice features of the tax code purchased by billionaires. Code section is 1031 of the IRC
