As I have reiterated many times, the Western Maryland Railway was a great well operated and maintained railroad. All of us who loved the WM are so grateful that there are parts of it still in service where folks can ride an excursion train including behind the mighty 1309 2-6-6-2 steam engine out of Cumberland, Maryland.

Stampede Tunnel in Washington State has a couple of them. It also has a couple of areas where fine old stones were used, apparently installed shortly after the tunnel was built to control moving clay seams that were breaking through even concrete lining. Hard to believe that those stones have withstood as many as 135 years in there with noisy, smoky trains going through and who knows how many derailments.
