Lake Erie Land Round-Up
Author: train1275

Sunday September 28, 2025
North Central Ohio
Temps in the 70's and still dry here, even though we had some rain on Wednesday.

Wednesday September 24th

1. - 2. NS 1069 the Virginian heritage leads Tr 39N through Vermilion with NS 1010 as a mid train DPU on a rainy afternoon.

Saturday September 27th

3. The L15 sweeps around the curve at Joppa Road west of Vermilion with NS 3617 and 4362.

4. Another view of L15 at Joppa.

5. & 6. Moving west to Bay Bridge west of Sandusky is 39N with NS 7561 and 3645. This proved to be a bad move due to the lighting at this time of day, so we quickly moved on.

7. 69G, mty stone train moves west at Poorman Road (west of Vermilion) on the Lake Shore Line, best lighting of the day. Power was NS 9966 and 9901.

8. A Lyman boat goes in to tie up at Romps Marina in Vermilion.

9. A very late 22X with the NS 1071 CNJ heritage unit leading NS 4323 comes over the Vermilion River. There just wasn't any good place to shoot this train with the light at this time of day. Oh well. dschlegel got an excellent video of this train the next day at Bowers, PA, many miles to the east of here. - https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,6083775

Sunday September 28th

10. -11. 28B rounds the big curve at Beaver Park Marina west of Lorain with NS 4079 and 4180. This part of the NKP was double-tracked in 1924, and the curve here was reconfigured to an easier alignment. I am thinking that when the 264 and 265 intermodals move off the former Boston & Maine Hoosac Tunnel route that 28B and 29P may disappear, blending into the rerouted 264 / 265 which will be substantially shortened by not having to run singles due to the tunnel clearances. Time will tell, but time may be running short for grabbing scenes like this today. Hoosac Tunnel is 4.75 miles long and was completed in 1875 near Florida / North Adams, MA.

12. I don't usually get too excited about these tug-barges, preferring regular boats, but when opportunity presents itself, especially at Lorain, well why not. Here is the barge Ashtabula propelled with the coupled tug Defiance which has just come under the former N&W RU bridge that 28B went over just a short time before.

13. - 15. Checking out the Defiance-Ashtabula coming under the Route 6 Charles Berry Bascule bridge and heading out to Lake Erie. The business end of the tug-barge is seen in the last photo. Tug Defiance is powered by two 20-645 EMD's producing 7,200 HP, two SD45's on the water.

16. Back trackside at Coen Road west of Vermilion on the Lake Shore line an Eagle-eye is spotting for action. Nothing is to be seen here so he flew off, and so did we.

17. The action is on the NKP side. Here is 10Q rocking and rolling east at Ashmont heading for GC and the connector to go to Conway Yard, Pittsburgh. Power is NS 4062 and 9854 up front with NS 1094 as a mid train DPU. The NKP's station here was called Ashmont, and 500 feet north on the Lake Shore line back in the days before double track the location was Joppa, west end of the passing siding (1870's era).

18. NS 4351 and 1183 come east on Train M2N on the Lake Shore line crossing the Vermilion River in Vermilion, OH.

19. A male Mallard Duck is excited about the next train, but his excitement is short lived as nothing comes. We head home, and it looks like this might be the end of the day trackside.

Excellent series of shots as always! Thanks for the good word about my video from this morning too!

Out of this set I think photo 11 is my favorite, it screams speed!

I would hate to have to climb that ladder to the upper pilot house on the tug at anytime, but definitely not in rough weather.
