Hammond Halloween, Pumpkin Time
Author: kevink

Took a couple of PTO this afternoon to head home for the trick or treaters. I was slightly delayed by the appearance of Chicago, Ft, Wayne and Eastern's Chicago-bound freight as it departed from IHB's Gibson Yard in Hammond, IN with CFE 4037 and 4032 in the lead. It's usually possible to get two attempts at a train along Willow Court so I headed west to the other side of Hohman Junction (crossing of the NS Ft. Wayne Line).
A surprise awaited in the form of BNSF 6078 waiting to head east with BNSF8248.

The westbound CFE train rolled past the BNSF 6078 which had been waiting for it to crossover at Hohman Jct. I headed back east to get the 6078 passing some fall color just west of the Calumet Avenue overpass.

The fun was not over yet. I was interuppted by a work call and pulled over to the side of Willow Court to answer it. As the call ended, a headlight appeared to the east. It was a westbound Indiana Harbor Belt train led by IHB 4019 and 4014.

Happy Halloween!

Thanks for the great photos. I spent much of my life in Robertsdale and did a fair amount of railfanning in "the Region."

The IHB GP40 "pumpkins " will soon be repainted in the Harbor's more recent Black-with- orange-trim scheme which is an almost exact replica of the original diesel scheme back in 1948.
