Muted fall colors, blue sky, zebra barns.
Author: scraphauler

Noon Saturday , 11/8, a short ACWR freight with a pair of SD60Fs and a SD40-3 rumbles through Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst NC under geourgeous 75 degree blue skies.  ACWR rosters 9 of the cowl units, but only 3 are in service.  Body work is evident on both these units arnd they are scheduled to be wrapped in in next few month.  Word is it will be an all new scheme, different from the green and cream freight scheme or the magenta and yellow passenger scheme.

Wish it was 75 and sunny here!  (Can't complain, though, as we've had a pretty nice autumn.)

What does the sign say in the lower righthand corner?

Sign?  You mean the spray paint on pavement?   If so, it says SCL LOC Locate Down Power Line.   SCL is Stake Center Locating (as opposed to Seaboard Coast Line). All part of the new club house and massive expantion of Pinewild, taking us from just shy of 1000 homes to near 1500 with two new clubhouse, a new massive pool, refurbish existing pool, new tennis and pickleball, and significant upgrade to the three golf courses that were already world class.

They aren't buying out your property, are they?  We had a dispatcher who'd retired and moved to Augusta, Georgia, close to Augusta National.  I heard from someone who'd talked to him, and the golf club there supposedly was expanding as well and had given him a good deal for his property and those of his neighbors.

No, I'm not going anywhere unless someone offers me stupid money.  Our development has 3 golf courses, plus a driving range and 3 hole practice course. 1050 lots, all acre plus, 980ish developed.  But we also had another 800 acres of undeveloped ground.  All belonged to a Japanese businessman. He sold it last year to IE Homes, Resorts, and Clubs.  IE stands for Icahn Enterprises, as in Carl Icahn (yes, THAT Carl Icahn).  Their plan is to develop the remaining acerage, building the homes themselves and selling them, and develop the amenities into a world class club that they can sell in 10-15 years at a premium to one of the big club operators.   This area has gone from less than 90k population in 2000 to over 115k right now.   Moore County averages 7 new residents a DAY, 365 days a year.  So there are a lot of big money developers working around here and NCDOT has right at $1 Billion in highway projects under construction or planned over next 5 years, many of which are extremely controversial.  The whole US 1 corridor from Wake County down through Chatham and Lee counties to Moore County is booming with new development to the great displeasure of the older generation who viewed area as a quite retirement area.

Yeah, I just saw in another forum, people railing about an interchange of I77 & I277 in Charlotte.  Lots of unhappy folks.  Does look a little crazy.

That's just one of many statewide that people are whining about. You want to go down a rabbit hole, look up Pinehurst Traffic Circle.

NC is growing at roughly 450-475 people a day, is now the 9th largest state and current growth rates show we will pass Georgia in next year or two and Ohio in 3-4 years to reach 7th largest with Illinois in the long range sites.  Growth is all migration, and that causes a lot of serious displeasure among the native Tarheels, as well as transplants who feel THEY should have been the last person allowed to move here.

I should have clarified - that $1 Billion I mentioned is just in the greater Southern Pines/Pinehurst area.  Statewide, the State Transportation Improvement Plan number is $9 billion, $1.8 billion of which is earmarked for rail related projects including right at a billion for grade separation and grade crossing improvement, $270 million for new Piedmont train sets and additional frequencies, plus nearly $100 million to the "S"Line" rebuilt that the Feds are kicking in a billion for.
