NS OCS units make their debut
Author: CR6377

SD70IACs 1230 and 1231 departed westbound out of Altoona this morning. Painted into a special tuscan and black mixed scheme, kind of like their passenger cars. The weather was poor, but to catch the debut of their engines, it had to be done. Both locomotives are the Birmingham (1230) and the Atlanta (1231)

Train is heading to I believe Birmingham. Seen at AR Tower in Gallitzin Pa and Torrance. Enjoy.

Thanks for sharing. Interesting paint scheme. Wonder why they decided to use SD70ACe's? Those are somewhat front line power with AC traction and DP.

Thanks for posting your interesting photos. Unfortunately, the weather does not always cooperate.
NS chose a very tasteful scheme for these units.

Almost 30 years after the mergers, there are still a handful of C&NW and SP painted locomotives running around on UP.

Painting costs money, and cuts into investors' profits. There's no reason to repaint freshly painted units so soon.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. If not painted by UP, most will be patched.

I guess I'm in the minorty. I think the half B&W, half color looks dorky. Are they taking a page form the CSX heritage units (also dorky IMO). But it's just my opinion.

It does seem like they took notes from CSX's offerings...though about them I am not seeing dorkiness in it...it's just the way they did it....they didn't invite me to chime in so...it is what is...and I had the L&N unit 1850 today and the whole trip people were lined up to take pictures...so I guess most folks like them...

I wonder how long this will last. In 2021 after the F units were disposed of, NS regeared SD60E 7034 and 7035 for 79 mph to be used on office car trains. That didn't last long.
