"Adirondack Equipment Move" Big Moose NY
Author: ut-1

On November 30th, Adirondack Railroad ran an equipment move up their line from Utica to Tupper Lake, NY, 108 miles. It was the last Utica-Tupper Lake move of the 2025 season.Up front was No. 2400, Trailing 2400 was engine 2050, recently repainted in its as-delivered NY Central paint scheme, No. 2050 will overwinter in the brand new enginehouse in Tupper Lake.

The crew stopped in Thendara, 52 miles from Utica, to pick up a camp car and caboose. Due to very challenging conditions on Big Moose Hill, the trip from Thendara to Big Moose took two hours instead of the 30 minutes it usually takes under ideal conditions.

I videoed the train as it passed by the line's summit in Big Moose. This is former NY Central country, Adirondack Division.

A much longer version of this video may be viewed on my YouTube channel, Railroading Rambler.

Sounds like the C-430 was dead--amazing how "empty" that line is, beautiful, but lonely!

What were the "challenging conditions on Big Moose Hill" that forced a 30 minute trip into two hours?  Cold?  Yes.  Snow?  Not so much.

According to the crew it was a combination of snow/icy rails and downed trees that accounted for their slow climb up the hill. The hill has 14 curves (2 of which are compound) with total curvature distance being 3.55 miles.
