NS on the B&A - A Horse of a Different Color
Author: bob01566

A horse of a different color!
For us railfans, one of the benefits of the new NS Voorheesville to Ayer turn is the appearance of NS's heritage units on the Z trains.
Here, NS 1074, the Lackawanna heritage unit, leading train Z264, splits the signals at MP57 in Charlton MA on a bitter cold Groundhog Day.
And, thank you, John, for the heads-up!

Enjoy -
Bob

Sweet shot - thanks for sharing and making the effort on a bitterly cold day!

So what's with the 'extra' signals protruding to the right of the vertical?

Outstanding view of one of the best of the heritage paint schemes - very well done, indeed. Congrats on a well-deserved IOTD.

Simplified explanation to your question: Due to cab signals without wayside/intermediate block signals being used on this line, these additional lights are called “c-lights”. The c stands for “clear to Next Interlocking”. When cab signals fail on a leading loco, for example, this c-light will flash while the other lights still display a signal. This informs the engineer of an oncoming train that he can proceed on the signal indication and that the track should be clear up to the next interlocking. Basically, he could then proceed prepared to stop at the next Interlocking unless he has another proceed signal and another C-light flashing. He could then continue on until he gets to CP45. If he is entering Worcester yard or diverting onto the PWRR, this C light would not be displayed because he is leaving cab signals only territory
