New York, Susquehanna & Western ran its third plow extra this winter on its Utica Branch NY on Jan 29th. This video features views of the train in Clayville, Cassville, Paris Station and on Schuyler Street, Utica, heading back to the yard.

It must have been cold as one could hear the snow crunching as you were walking. Real nice video!

I like the opening walking down the alley, oh wait-that's the railroad! The driven part
gets plowed and tossed on the tracks, the plow comes by and tosses it right back.

Thx for chasig a plow i that weather.     Is the NYSW leasing that CSX GP40 for free?   Seems they could have gotten another one of their own engines up there long ago....

Nobody I know of leases locomotives for free. They pay a market based lease rate through Conrail Shared Assets for four axle power; a mix of NS and CSX units that cycle in and out. NYSW is responsible for daily maintenance, servicing and minor repairs. The units are cycled out back to CSX and NS for their periodic inspections and any major work needed. Normally there are six on the property somewhere at any given time to supplement the NYSW six-axle road units.

NYSW only has the 3040 as a four axle unit, and that is the preferred power to use based in Utica due to tight industry tracks like the brewery and the industrial tracks out to New Hartford and New York Mills. Thought has been given numerous times to acquire additional 4 axle power, but there are various considerations involved which to date have driven the current arrangement with Shared Assets to continue the lease arrangement.

Nice video, however I’m not a fan of the incubator horn technique.

Thanks for being able to ride around with you chasing that plow.  I look forward to the next snowfall needing the plow ;-)

3040 which has been out of service for some time recently left to somewhere for repair work,
at least that's the prevailing rumor. An Adirondack MLW unit subbed for a day or two a while
back as well.
