Eastern Railroad Discussion > Mean Streets of Topton, PA with a Heritage UnitDate: 02/20/26 18:41 Mean Streets of Topton, PA with a Heritage Unit Author: dschlegel I knew the Nickel Plate heritage unit was leading 18N today, and was last reported on HU in Duncannon, PA just before 6pm today headed my way.
I slacked off on walking the beagles a bit and took Lucy first around 8:30 PM. As I was bringing her in the front door I heard a horn to the west. I quickly cycled pups and walked out the front door with Dixie. We got to the Main St. crossing just in time to catch what I think was the 30A (not the 18N I was hoping for) with a nice set of EMD power. Heres what I think is the 30A. Note Dixie’s attempt to replicate the train horn! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/20/26 18:45 by dschlegel. You must be a registered subscriber to watch videos. Join Today! Date: 02/20/26 18:44 Re: Mean Streets of Topton, PA with a Heritage Unit Author: dschlegel Figuring I had missed the 18N we crossed back to the good side of the tracks and started for home. Not too long into our return trip I heard another horn blowing for Deka Rd and then Lyons.
We headed back towards the Main St. crossing and low and behold we caught the Nickel Plate unit NS 8100 rolling past restaurant row at exactly 9:25PM. Have a great night! Dan Edited 1 time(s). Fun to watch your rescue Beagles on your railfanning dogwalks. It sure has been wet now that the "Polar Vortex" went away. Heavy rains overnight last night and a damp day today/tonight. Water got into the breaker box through the inside of the power drop from the meter to the basement, again! I guess the extreme cold broke the seal at the meter, again. This happened about 5 years ago. The GFI breaker for the two bathrooms doesn't like getting wet! It must still be damp it won't reset. Be super careful with your breaker box situation, a house down the block burned to the ground about 15 years ago from the same problem you’re describing! Luckily no one was hurt and the pets got out Ok. Dan Posted from iPhone Date: 02/20/26 20:13 Re: Mean Streets of Topton, PA with a Heritage Unit Author: Gonut1 Dan,
Yes, seriously. I have become more concerned with the baseboard electric heat that has fried wiring in the thermostat wall boxes three times. Once a couple years ago and again twice this year. This is a total electric home so these thermostats are critical, especially in the last month! Funny when I was a litle kid i wanted to be a hermit and live in a log cabin. Somehow that doesn't sound so bad today. A wood stove and no dependance on today's technology! Be warm, be dry and hopefully the snow predicted for Sunday isn't as bad as expected. I'm closer to the I-95 Corridor so 4-6" is expected here. At 80 years of age I'm not up to heavy rearranging of snow! Last snow mess my landscaper neighbor shoved some around but without a contract he is nervous of property damage. I let him push the stuff around, not too concerned about damage. But I don't expect this as the wife and I really don't need to get anywhere. I have a 4X4 Ranger and she has a Jeep Renegade. We can just push our way out of the driveway. Plus I work from home, the wife is retired. Waiting on this next winter storm... I will always love night railroading - the sight, the sound, and the feel. Dixie responding to the horn makes it more special.
