Eastern Railroad Discussion > More Snowy shots around Cresson, PADate: 02/22/26 14:56 More Snowy shots around Cresson, PA Author: JUTower Continuing from our snowy long weekend in Cresson, Saturday Feb 7 was cold and snowy, and traffic patterns were unusual. Due to the derailment cleanup east of Horseshoe Curve, Allegheny Dispatcher had to line all traffic on #1, leading to some relatively rare westbound moves up "The Slide".
Starting out in Cresson... 1. Amtrak 42 overtakes tied down 38G at Cresson. AMTK 116 P42DC 2. An approach medium aspect westbound on #1 at AR, with the forlorn tower in the background. While we all miss the position lights, it is still neat to see a signal aspect such as this up on the mountain. 3. A westbound 257 ascends "The Slide". NS 7532 ES44DC. Date: 02/22/26 14:58 Re: More Snowy shots around Cresson, PA Author: JUTower 4. Helpers shoving the 257 to the top of the grade.
5. Next, we went in to "old" SF. NS 29G ascending "The Slide" behing NS 4148 AC44C6M 6. "Going away shot" with the helper set about to plunge into the New Portage tunnel. Date: 02/22/26 15:01 Re: More Snowy shots around Cresson, PA Author: JUTower We enjoyed this enough that we decided to pick up where we'd left off, the morning of Sunday Feb 8 after our tasty breakfast at The Station Inn.
10. NS 8045 leads NS 11N west on 1 on "The Slide" approaching the New Portage Tunnel. (ES44AC) 11. And the helper set 12. We conclude this series with Amtrak 42 popping out of the Allegheny Tunnel. Enjoy! -Alex Date: 02/22/26 15:34 Re: More Snowy shots around Cresson, PA Author: dschlegel Neat series Alex!
On a side note a coworker of mine is staying with you for his first time this weekend. His son is a railfan and wanted to stay at the Station Inn for his birthday! I can’t wait to hear his report! Dan Posted from iPhone Date: 02/22/26 22:42 Re: More Snowy shots around Cresson, PA Author: NPRocky That tower is indeed forlorn. It looks like somebody started to tear it down, then just quit.
