Eastern Railroad Discussion > Weekend Round UP - Lake Erie LandDate: 03/01/26 13:25 Weekend Round UP - Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 Sunday March 1, 2026
North Central Ohio 27 degrees, sunny 1. - 3. Yesterday February 28th, we mostly got skunked and only got the 316 on the NKP coming through Vermilion from the Vermilion Road overpass. As they come by, Engineer Danny Whitt gives a hearty wave. The DPU is seen in a going away shot (image 3) passing under the Lake Shore line (ex New York Central). Power is NS 4578 up front and NS 4519 as the mid-train DPU. The light totally sucks here late in the day, like trying to shoot into a big black hole. The brick building seen in the background is the former Wakefield Brass Company. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 03/01/26 13:47 by train1275. 4. - 6. Train 269 (Port Newark, NJ to Landers Yard - Chcago, IL intermodal) makes an impressive sight as it rounds the big curve and approaches Joppa Road west of Vermilion. Power is NS 4173 and 4156. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/01/26 13:28 by train1275. Date: 03/01/26 13:36 Re: Weekend Round UP - Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 7. Stopping by Shinrock on the NKP and we find a short Train 18N (auto loads, Bellevue to Doremus, NJ) tied down for some reason at Wikel Road with NS 1201 solo. Nothing else happening so we move on.
8. & 9. Popping up at Ceylon, OH between Huron and Vermilion and Train 36N (merchandise - Madison, IL to Conway, PA) moves east through the 228 signals with NS 4272 and UP 8439 up front and BNSF 7035 as a rear DPU. 11. Checking out the consist; TCHX 5070, a Tokai Carbon hopper. 12. A tank car load of Hydrochloric Acid; GATX 4681. Date: 03/01/26 13:44 Re: Weekend Round UP - Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 13. Bringing up the rear is a very dirty BNSF 7035. This train consummed almost 3 hours to go from Vickers (MP 285) just east of Toledo and here at MP 228 a distance of about 57 miles. Not sure what happened. Then as late as 3 hours later he was dinking around in Cleveland, 38 miles east. Nothing seems to be moving fast today.
A few more today .... 14. Well I thought we were done for the day, but then along comes 315 on the NKP just before the light faded. While waiting for 315 down at the NKP Vermilion River bridge an eastbound went by on the other side of the river. The problem is, the NKP westbounds here come up pretty fast and silent, so if a train is going by on the Lake Shore line you just have to be poised and ready else they will be on top of you before you realize it. Not only this eastbound, but in a few seconds a westbound will be adding to the racket and clatter. 15. We hear the 315 call KM a little over a mile out, so we've got a few minutes yet as these geese fly over. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/01/26 16:13 by train1275. Date: 03/01/26 16:18 Re: Weekend Round UP - Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 16. A waxing gibbous moon lurks overhead. Today the air has a feel and the sky and light more resemble a late Fall day rather than March 1st.
17. & 18. Now comes the 315 with NS 4090 all nice and shiny up front and NS 1153 as a mid-train DPU.. Yesterday we saw the 316 go east and got a big wave from Engineer Danny Whitt (image #2), now today he gives another big wave as he returns home to Bellevue from Conneaut. Edited 2 time(s).
