Which railroad serves the Whiskey Island salt mine?
Author: LTCerny

Does anyone know which railroad serves the salt mine the entrance of which is located on Whiskey Island in Cleveland?  My understanding is that this is the largest salt mine in the US and that it extends some miles under Lake Erie.

Based on this very old map, it's ex-PRR, ex-NYC, or ex-Erie. Dunno if that helps you at all, though.  :-)

The former EL is long gone, and it was over on the other side of the old channel of the Cuyahoga River. Today NS pulls loads and spots empties in the old Riverbed (ex PRR) yard and takes them to Rockport yard. Cargill has their own pup and does the inside plant switching. A good portion of these cars are picked up by CSX at Rockport yard (I know, I switched out thousands in my time there :)

Here is a more modern schematic version of the map, focusing on NS, showing the region updated through 2020.  The inner Cleveland area is remarkably similar in layout to the historic map - maybe a coincidence?
