CPKC Haverty Sub update
Author: tuxedorailfan

I haven’t given a Haverty sub update recently, but after running my first train across it as Engineer yesterday, it deserves the spotlight. And for those unaware, this is the former Meridian and Bigbee line from Meridian, MS to Myrtlewood, AL.

Ribbon Rail, ties and fresh ballast have been laid.

The company finally did the track upgrades to it. Speed is now 49MPH from West Naheola to MP19 (whynot, MS). From MP19-10 it’s 45MPH, then from MP10 until the East Meridian yard board it’s 40MPH.

The bridge at Naheola has had significant repairs done and is now good for 20MPH, then 49 MPH from East Naheola to Myrtlewood yard.

5/1/26 is when dedicated intermodal service is slated to begin. I’ll update more when I get more details.

If someone would’ve told me 5 years ago that CPKC and CSX would partner up and buy this property, upgrade it to 49MPH, and run 8,000’ double stack and mixed freight trains across here, I would’ve laughed and called you a fool for dreaming. The egg is on my face…

Someone familiar with the M&B and the L&N 50 years ago would have given a million-to-one odds against this. What's the max authorized speed now on CSX from Myrtlewood to Selma and then to Montgomery?

I believe CSX has their side up to 49MPH as well. Or at least a large majority of it. They’ve also spent a lot of cash on the bridge repairs

CPKC + CSX jointly purchased the Meridian and Bigbee from Genesee and Wyoming in November 2024.

Cooperation is possible without a very expensive takeover.

It must be operating the local traffic:

M&B still exists.

CPKC and CSX bought the line from G&W. M&B still runs on it to switch local customers. They handle all of the local work because CPKC didn’t want to do that.

M&B no longer goes all the au to Montgomery though. They go to Naheola and occasionally to myrtlewood yard to interchange cars.

AGR comes to Myrtlewood via Lisman and does interchange work.

CSX handles all traffic and such east of Myrtlewood.
