Eastern Railroad Discussion > Saturday in Lake Erie LandDate: 05/02/26 16:26 Saturday in Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 Saturday May 2, 2026
North Central Ohio Kentucky Derby Day Temps in the mid 40's, sunny, chilly and damp The Spring dampness is really getting to me. 1. Train 269 Port of Newark, NJ to Landers Yard - Chicago slowly rolls through Huron with NS 4001 and 4889. He'll be going into the former PRR yard at Sandusky to work, then down to Bellevue before going west. Gas went up a dollar a gallon earlier in the week, then dropped 20 cents / gallon at most places yesterday, but I guess not here. 2. & 3. Then we find Train 258 (Voltz Yard KCMO to Rutherford, PA) on the NKP out of Bellevue coming through GC at Coen Road. The track to the right is the west-leg connector. Up ahead 258 will take the east-leg connector. Power is NS 7702 and 4290. Date: 05/02/26 16:30 Re: Saturday in Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 4. And there goes the 258 taking the left hand turn onto the east-leg connector heading for the Lake Shore line and Amherst, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and points east.
5. & 6. Sitting at the Vermilion docks we catch 15K, he'll take the east-leg connector and the NKP to Bellevue that 258 just cleared. Power is NIS 8009, 8062, 9860 and 4059. Date: 05/02/26 16:35 Re: Saturday in Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 7. Next up is Train 256 (Ashland Ave - Chicago to Croxton, NJ intermodal) with NS 4363 and 7561.
8. As it passes by a Canada Goose is dunking his head in and out of the water. 9. Then 22X (55th Street - Chicago to Croxton, NJ) roars east with NS 4951 and 1147 up front and NS 8029 as a mid-train DPU. Date: 05/02/26 16:41 Re: Saturday in Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 10. While waiting for the next train there are a few big birds flying overhead; a hawk who was being harrassed by a sea gull and an Osprey checking the surroundings out.
Nothing more came, so we headed for home. 11. Out in the backyard was the Herbert C. Jackson going down lake from Marblehead to Cleveland. 12. Then hearing that 315 was coming at us from Conneaut on the NKP with a KCS leader, and it was out again to the docks. The light was perfect when we arrived, then it just got worse ... but finally the train came with KCS 4841 leading. Date: 05/02/26 16:45 Re: Saturday in Lake Erie Land Author: train1275 13. In the consist was one of the WABTEC Hybrid Battery-Diesels; HL024.
14. More new Alaska RR flat cars heading for the Great White North. This one is ARR 12452. 15. ..... and the rear DPU which is BNSF 7530. That's it for today. Date: 05/02/26 17:38 Re: Saturday in Lake Erie Land Author: dschlegel Excellent set as always!
I accidentally caught that 269 yesterday afternoon. I was walking out of my mechanic’s office in Bowers, PA when the 4001 rolled west right by his shop. It was a nice suprise!
