A catch-up post of odds and ends as I haven't been out much lately. It's just too hot for my tastes to stand out there with the high sun this time of year.

Tuesday June 23rd

1. I was out for a walk and caught 28B, the Chicago - Buffalo intermodal with BNSF 5982 and 4629 leading past the rail park. Met another TO member there from out in Western Ohio and had a good morning, but didn't catch much.

2. A wave from the 28B.

3. 28B rolls by and who can miss out on a chance to get a big trash dumpster as a photo prop !!  The dumpter was left over from the big Fish Festival held the previous weekend.

4. A sea gull flies past the back yard.

5. At this time of year we can catch the sunset from our balcony. Nothing like a Lake Erie sunset !

Wednesday June 24th

6. Train 315 proceeds westbound towards Bellevue crossing the Vermilion River on the NKP on Wednesday afternoon. A family of mallard ducks take refuge in the shade as Engineer Danny Whitt gives a friendly wave. His power today was NS 4633 up front and UP 5914 as a mid train DPU.

7. The tug-barge Dorothy Ann slides by in the back yard.

Monday June 29th

8. & 9. With the patio door cracked to get some morning air circulation, I heard the distinctive sound of radial engines. I grabbed the camera and flung open the door and found a B25 coming low and close over the lake ! This is Georgie's Gal based in Port Clinton, OH at the Liberty Aviation Museum. Not everyday you can get shots like this from the comfort of your living room.

10. And there goes the B25 back home to Port Clinton after a little fly about.

Today, Wednesday July 1, 2026
The temperature was at 93 when I reluctantly went out just after lunch, and the weather service said the "real feel" was 112 !!

11. NS SD40-3 #6433 leads work train 947 east through Vermilion, an unusual catch here. NS 6433 was built as BN 7224 in June 1980 as an SD40-2.

12. Then around the big curve comes 10Q off the east-leg connector out of Bellevue bound for Conway, PA with NS 4803, 9885 and 7710 leading.

13. NS 4339 and 1811 are the mid-train DPU's on Train 10Q. He's a monster at 242 cars.

14. In the middle of the train is a scale test car; NS 982563. Back in my day we had to place these cars at the rear of the train.

15. Now the reason I went out .... the New York Central heritage unit: NS 1066 leading Chicago to Croxton, NJ intermodal Train 256. the NYC is one of my favorite heritage units and on home rails here no less. NS 4868 was the 2nd unit.

16. - 18. Allow me, if you will, to present a few shots of the NS 1066 as it passes by on this very hot Lake Erie Land afternoon. I am standing at Vermilion's Lake Shore & Michigan Southern depot which has long since seen its last arriving and departing passengers.

IIRC, the scale test cars that were required to be at the end of the train were much smaller with only two axles?

Another first-class set - Thanks especially for the B25 images. My dad was a radio/gunner on a B25 during WW II. He completed 58 missions.

Dramatic sunset and wonderful catch of the bomber!
About the only thing i see from my front door is a dove sitting on phone cables!

That is a Maxson scale test car, ex Conrail #80089. Due to having an airbrake system, it can be handled anywhere in the train. Many of the older 2 axle cars had straight through air (no air brakes) and had to be handled as the next to the last car, 30mph speed restrictioon IIRC.
