CSX Derailment downtown Richmond VA 7/3/26
Author: scraphauler

CSX G635-30 out of Columbus OH headed to the ACWR in Aberdeen NC has derailed and has several cars in the water in downtown Richmond VA.   This version of G635 is a double train (which is common) - has 2 units up front, 89 loads, 2 more units, and another 90 or so loads.   Cars showin in attached link are the rear of the first 89 car train, and power shown is the mid train power/power for second train. https://www.wric.com/news/local-news/richmond/train-derailment-kanawha-canal-july-3/

Ouch!
Is this the same location where CSX dumped a coal train a few years back? It went in the river causing the environmentalists to go berserk. The idea of polluting the river with naturally formed Dinosaur era vegetation turned carbon seemed silly to me.

There are some pictures of the accident posted on Facebook by a group called Commonwealth Media Group, LLC.  Lucky that the 2 DPU units didn't end up in the water.

Maybe. But raw coal contains small amounts of mercury and arsenic. I would not want either in my drinking or fishing water.

The James River is a major source of drinking water.

No coal cars involved.  News showed covered hoppers.

These grain trains that come into Richmond on the C&O river line... once they've pulled past the Main St Station switch, do they run through Acca to get pointed south or go back toward Acca just far enough to use the ex-SAL over the river?

They may go either way.....depends on the operational realities at the time.
