NS Derailment Bucyrus OH 7/5/26

NS 170 is on ground in Bucyrus OH, forcing a 1 mile radius evacuation due to leaking hydrochloric acid.  Pictures courtesy of Bucyrus Police Department

I so hate when this happens. I'm guessing so does NS!
Hopefully no injuries to the crew or anyone else.
Acid spills are nasty. My long ago Brother-in-Law worked in a computer chip manufacturing facility. They had a gaseous acid leak (Hydroflouric Acid? Long ago now). None of the Emergency Responders had training in such an environment. He put on whatever protective gear they used during daily operations and walked into the acidic mist and shut off the valve. I recall he said the fumes would burn any exposed skin. He was rather nonchalant about the whole episode. Just shut off the source of the problem and everyone can move along. Nothing to see here. Go home.
Hopefully it is that easy in Bucyrus!

The Fort Wayne line between Crestline and Alliance,Ohio is very well maintained. I'm not sure who is responsible for maintenance of the line from Crestline to Bucyrus...CSX perhaps?

Evacuation was cut back to a quarter mile radius
And may have been lifted totally by now.

Derailment looks to have happened on the wye track between PRR & NS(N&W).  NS trains from Pittsburgh to Columbus use this connector track.
