Cumberland Md traffic
Author: mully

Been years since I have been to Cumberland. With the hump yard being gone how many trains can you expect in a day ? Also what AAR channels used ?

Thanks

Hi. I believe around 20 plus a day on average. They did redo the yard and are switching around 900 to even a few times 1,000 cars a day from 300 after the hump closed from a video CSX put out.

CSX renovated the yard and re-opened it about a year ago and traffic has also ticked up since the Baltimore tunnel project wrapped up.  Can't really speak for east of Cumberland but over Sand Patch to/from the west you are currently looking at roughly 3 pairs intermodals each way, 2 auto pairs each way, and 3 manifest pair each way, plus maybe 1-2 pairs of some variety of extra coal/unit tank/grain movement every day, plus Amtrak. So a slow day maybe 16-17 in 24 hours and a busy day 22-23 with an average right around 20. Unfortunately, unlike 20+ years ago when traffic was heavily weighted in the daytime, things are pretty well spread around the clock nowadays and long lulls are common.

The Mountain sub is still pretty much a pair or manifests plus highly variable coal business. Maybe 6-10 total/ 24 hours depending on coal.

Figure most of that volume from both lines combining east of Cumberland.

The Sand Patch railcam is a good resource for when trains might be running

Is CSX still doing the tonnage reduction thing for the manifest trains on the Mountain Sub? Thanks.

I have lost track of how they are doing this with the manifest overflow. But yes in some way shape or form they run an as needed train as an L162 east or L165 west. I don’t know whether the set out still happens at Keyser or if they are just running straight from Cumberland. I have seen both versions the past few years.

Cumberland Radio channels are:

CSX Road AAR 008
Keystone Sub Dispatcher AAR 094
Mountain Sub Dispatcher AAR 014
Cumberland Yard Channel AAR 036

Last year I found the east side of Cumberland to be busier than west. Viaduct Junction is good for catching Keystone and Mountain Sub action.

Green Spring, WV was also a very good spot.

Hope this helps.
Greg

When the Mountain sub was busy, how many trains per day did it see??

Thanks.  Seems like this started when EHH took over, and (I'm guessing here) that traffic that once was classified at Willard yard was moved to Queensgate, so the Mountain Sub and its connection to Cincinnati became the route for this traffic).
