Following my previous post on the subject, the essence of which was also forwarded to county government officials and others, several courteous and helpful replies have informed me of additional complexities involved in the situation.  Some alternatives being considered involve a continued use of the Derwood-Dickerson trash train for part of the waste, which would involve maybe a few trains a week. it is intended to try to reduce the volume of waste generated in the county by various means.  Opinions vary considerably on rehabilitating the present Dickerson incinerator to whch the train presently takes the trash.  My own opinion is still for keeping train operation as is and handling the technical issues of the incinerator as deemed necessary, but it's worth listening to what citizens and waste handling professionals have to say at the September 2nd Town Hall meeting (see prevous post for details).  I'll plan on doing another update after that meeting.

I recommed that anyone trying to keep the trash train operation going start coordinating with the full time political representative of the rail labor organization known as SMART-TD. His name is David Pendleton.
Dave's job is protecting existing rail labor jobs in Maryland and incresing theim if possible. Protecting the "Trash Train" and jobs on the CSXT railroad is one of Dave's priorities.

An additional angle would be to somehow inform regular drivers on the  I-270.freeway about this issue.  That highway can be a mess at almost any hour, and I;m sure the motorists wouldn't be happy about additional garbage truck traffic. especially being stuck next to one in a traffic jam.

And  obviously, those garbage trucks on the hightway will be much bigger than your neighborhood ones. I assume they will be containers on flats?

At my Florida home, gtrash is  picked up by a contractor to Volusia County who is using Class 8 trucks with a GVW of 80,000 pounds.  They are hard on the local streets during summer when there is ;ack of sufficient curbing to hold the asphalt in place.
