NS has increased its order with Wabtec for DC to AC ES44ACM rebuilds from its ES44DC units. Eight units had been planned, but that has increased to 33 units (NS 7781-7813), with the 8 coming soon this year and the 25 additional for 2027.

When are the Progress Rail units supposed to start delivery?

They are supposed to start in 2027 with delivery going into 2029.

Because the early ES44DC's are 22+ years old and many were out of service needing heavy work, so it made sense to rebuild those units rather than just repair.  Wabtec will be doing the DC to AC conversions of the ES44DC's while the NS Juniata Shops will continue rebuilding the Dash 9-44CW's.
