I had a "DASH 8" vanity plate from 1990-1993 when I lived in Connecticut. When I moved to Ohio, I learned that they charge an annual premium for personalized plates -- not just a special-plate registration fee -- and decided it wasn't worth the money. I believe Connecticut has since imposed an annual surcharge, too.

I have a license plate that is sponsored by the RR Museum of PA. It has a picture of a Pennsy K-4 with a four-digit number. It is NOT a personalized plate.

CT has the hightest percentage of personalized plates, followed by VA. These states have the cheapest rates.

We had "DRGW 17" on our Ford Escort while living in Missouri back in the late '80s. My mother and I took the car on a week long trip to shoot the Grande back in '89 and I have a neat shot of the car posed in front of the ready tracks at Minturn, Co.

I used to have RRENGNR on my truck in New Jersey, which charges a one time $50 fee, assuming its on the standard base and not part of a specialty design. The thing was stolen off my truck at work, in Newark, NJ at Oak Island yard one night. At least they left me the one plate so I could drive home then cancel them out. I also had EL SD45 at one time, but at present have NJ "Liberty State Park" specialty plates. As a plate collector, I have several railfan tags in my collection, notably a VA tage reading NS FAN and another VA plate reading "RF&P FN", plus som NJ ones such as "RRAGENT" and "MARKOFF". The PA steam engine plate is a specialty group, "Preserve Our Heritage" plate that rasies money for museums and PA heritage collections, I believe. VA also just issued a 611-Themed specialty plate, I believe....

Virginia recently came out with a N&W 611 plate. It has a color drawing of 611 and proceeds from the plate go to the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke. Mine reads STMTRN.

Moved to Tennessee this past summer from Ontario where I had Run 8 personal plates. Fortunately it wasn't being used here so will be applying the Tennessee version this weekend.

Here's a recent shot taken on the abandoned Tracy City Branch that leads up to the north portal of CSX's J-Line Cowan Tunnel.

When out railfanning "have an eye for Run 8 on the plate"
