ex-Chessie U23B's

Can somebody tell me when and where the last U23B in
Chessie colors was repainted (or scrapped) under CSXT?

Thanks in advance.

I have two guesses, Huntinton, or Cumberland, take your choice, thats where most of the stuff goes to, mainly Cumberland behind the shops.

I don't think Cumbo is painting anymore these days though....just Huntington. A lot of paint work gets farmed out too I bet. (Maybe VMV Paducahbilt)

Whipping out my C&O Diesel Loco book (which is doubling as a flat surface for my
mouse pad at the moment :), the last C&O U23B on CSX's roster was 2325 (CSX 3225),
in stealth gray scheme. I don't know when it was retired though, as it was still
active at the time of the writing. Only 13 made it to CSX, the rest were sold to
Seaboard, who traded them in on B36-7's. The ones that made it to CSX were 2300,
2303, 2304, 2305, 2309, 2310, 2311, 2318, 2321, 2322, 2323, 2325 and 2329. All
ended up being renumbered to CSX numbers (add 900 to the C&O number to make them
CSX 3200's)

I can't tell you when the last Chessie U23B was repainted or scrapped, but I can tell you that, according to the Bull Sheet of May 1993, the only two ex-C&O's still on the roster were both in CSX Gray paint at that time.

John,

Of the 13 that made it to their CSX numbers, 9 remained in Chessie paint. I saw 6 of those 9 in Waycross GA on a visit in October of 1991. They may have already been off the roster and just awaiting disposition, but they were there. They were all gone by my next visit two years later in September of 1993.

Hope that helps!

Did any of the U23Bs survive? Or were they all scrapped?

A few managed to escape the torch. I believe 5 or 6 that were in the the 9500 series wearing MOW orange went to the Tishomingo RR in Iuka, MS and are in service, as well as Georgia Central 1004. Those are the only ones I know off the top of my head.

none of the 9500 series were ex-Chessies...they were long gone before
CSX started the MOW units. The 9500 series were all ex-L&N U23B's.
Also, GC 1004 looks more like an ex-L&N U23B too, since it has the blanked
out light in the numberboard, and a nose headlight. Chessie's had the headlight
in the numberboard and no noselight casting. GC did end up with some ex-C&O U30B's
though, in the late 80's when CSX disposed of them (whipping out my C&O book again)
8204->CSXT 5332->GC 1004 (a different 1004 than they have now)
8213->CSXT 5351->GC 1005
8219->CSXT 5347->GC 1006
8221->CSXT 5349->GC 1007
8222->CSXT 5350->GC 1008
8223->CSXT 5351->GC 1009
8230->CSXT 5358->GC 1010
8232->CSXT 5360->GC 1011
8214->CSXT 5342->GC parts source
Also, Nashville & Eastern got some C&O U30B's too. 8200 (CSXT 5328),
8210-8212 (5338-5340), 8215-8217 (5343-5345). They kept the CSX numbers. Some are still
on the roster. I saw 5328 as a parts source the day after Christmas in Lebanon TN
last year, still in Chessie paint. (was missing trucks, and some other misc parts)

Does my heart good to see the book getting some use yet!

You're definitely right 4617, my mind lost the "Chessie" part of the discussion and just wandered to ex CSX U23B's.

oh yea, I forgot that was your book :) That's the other reason I use it as my
"flat surface" for my mouse pad...it's right there if I need to look up something :)
(there's no room on my desk for my mouse, so I set the pad on a book on my lap)
