Decoders for certain engines.......
Author: Conrail1

Hello everybody,
I was wondering what is the best decoder for the atlas HO B23-7 and any Athearn RTR unit in HO? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you have a brand preference?

I used a NCE D14SRP decoder in my Atlas units that come DCC ready. As far as the Athearn locomotives, I don't own any so don't have a clue.

I assume you mean Blue Box Athearns? Use a Digitrax DH123AT or DH163AT. They have the no-solder harness so its a drop-in installation that can be done in five minutes. Just watch the wires - they're small, so they can come un-soldered from the connectors.

The RTR Athearns that have "DCC Ready" on the box have the DCC harness inside. Remove end plug from harness and replace with a Digitrax DH123D or DH163D

Atlas B23-7's have an NMRA 8 pin plug on the electronics board. Remove jumper board and replace with either a Digitrax DH163IP or a DH163PS or DH123PS.

The NCE decoder for the Athearn RTR with the plugs are D13SRJ or the D15SRP. Both use the 9-pin plug. I have used the D13SRJ with out any problems.
