Seriously? Why do they not continue with more 70ace's? There are other 'real' paint schemes and configs to do.

Slow down there. They hardly (if ever) run back to back releases of new models. This allows them to spread production and demand out. If I was ordering 2 or 3 70ACEs from the first run (last month), chances are I wouldn't have the money for 2 or 3 more this month. Next month? Better chance. They did this with the SD40T-2s when they came out in RTR, and I believe they are doing it with the SD60M/Is too.

I might have to pick up another one or two of the DRGW AC4400s. I have a pair from the first run, and they look sharp.

Seriously? Athearn is in business to make money, and they'll make whatever they think will make them the most money for them, "real" paint schemes not withstanding.

A $20.00 price increase on these models? Could it be so?

Yay more BN SD60Ms, my weakness...

Last years run of bethgons were $120 and now they are $140? Before too long, women will be cheaper than model railroading!

The Rio Grande fantasy locos are Dash-9's this time, not AC4400's as was the previous run. Wish they'd have done 3 numbers in the AC4400, much more usable than the Dash-9 and yet they do 3 numbers in the Dash-9. Oh well, I'll still get them. Hope for more Rio Grande AC4400's.

I know everyone complains about the fantasy schemes but they sell and they sell well. I personally think they're a nice break from the usual everyday boring that is the prototype paint schemes.

My Athearn wish list
Author: toledopatch

If the Fantasy schemes sell well, then keep on runnin' them, Athearn. I just won't buy any.

What I will buy, if they're produced, are more of the 13,000-gallon sulphuric acid tank cars in 1990-appropriate UTLX and Procor paint schemes. My other Athearn wish is for some high-hood Guilford/Springfield Terminal SD45s. Surely these would sell at least as well as CSS&SB GP38-2s.

I'm also looking forward to seeing what Athearn does with the intermodal flats. Lots of potential there.

That pretty much covers it. Except for the three W&W 2600s waiting for me at my dealer, I feel maxed out on sand and cement hoppers, I'll still buy boxcars but I don't really have a wish-list for them, and as long as Athearn primarily produces its four-bay Center-Flow plastics hopper in three-bay grain-car paint schemes, I won't be buying any of those.

This wish-list does not include any car designs that Athearn doesn't already make or hasn't disclosed plans to make. Honestly, the diversity of car selections available has never been better.

Regardless of what I think of those railroads' painting practices, such equipment wouldn't fit into my time frame or modeling plan.

Athearn's advertising
Author: toledopatch

I just took a little spin around the PDFs for some of Athearn's latest announcements, which arrived in my e-mail box today.

I wish Athearn were a little more precise with the date ranges. For example, while the SD45s in the new release are listed as 1960s-present, all of the paint schemes depicted were either renumbered (SP), repainted (ATSF), or retired (CNW, PC) more than 20 years ago. So while there may still be SD45s in service in a few places, it's misleading to the uninitiated to promote a Penn Central SD45 as appropriate for that entire timeframe.

Those SP numbers for the SD45 are for the second delivery back in 1967.

Right, but weren't those SD45s rebuilt and renumbered during the 1980s? I don't recall seeing any SD45s with 8800-series numbers when I made my first trips to California in 1988 and 1992, though I must concede that my 1988 trip occurred before I started keeping a written log of the trains I photograph.

Yes, most were rebuilt or retired by the late 80s in that series.
