Trying to make a Athearn "Blue Box" model a little more interesting... A piece of "Grande" equipment that is grand no more...

Looks great. I'll take a realistic weathered bluebox car over a out of the box higher end model any day.

Well done. Nothing wrong with a blue box!

Not at all. The newer kits even have metal wheel sets and kadee couplers and now the painting detail is crisp and has most of the numbering, specs and warning labels

I'm pretty sure Athearn has not yet made the leap to kadee couplers.... Now THAT would be something...

Very nice! Did you use the q-tip weathering technique? By that I mean applying the base weathering color and then wiping it off with downward strokes? Did you use oils or acrylics? Regardless, you can't argue with the results!

Since Horizon owns McHenry, Athearn's use of Kadee couplers is not likely anytime soon.

Chet

P.S. Anyone need a bucket full of plastic McHenry's or Accumates?? ;)

Very nice! Do you happen to have a shot or two of the prototype, or did you freelance it?

It's completely freelanced... Many ex-Rio Grande hoppers running around for the various leasing company's, but this one is not a particular car...

As for the method used for aging the car... A.I.M. weathering liquids (I think it's just rubbing alcohol and powder) brushed on and then wiped with a paper towel...

Thanks for the comments!
