Cleaning Athearn Motor Brushes

How do you clean the brushes and commutator on an Athearn motor? (I tried a search but didn't get anything specific.)

Thanks,

Charles

Usually you replace the brushes in a motor as they wear down and clean the commutator(where they rub), brushes and springs used to be available from Athearn parts, not sure now, Think I use to use alcohol to clean the commutator, Ed,

I rub the commutator with a pencil eraser then clean out between the bars with an X-acto knife then lightly scrape the brush faces with the knife.

Hi there.

I use white spirits on a cotton bud. Use a dry cotton bud to dry the surface and remove the remaining film.

This has worked well for me.

Sorry, forgot to mention that, that was for the commutator face.

the pencil eraser trick works well. just get the motor spinning very fast and touch the pencil eraser lightly to the comutator until is is nice and shinny. you may have to clean the eraser if the com is very dirty. rubbing alchohol on a cotton swab also works quite well.

I do it with the motor apart since I'm cleaning and oiling everything anyway.
