Canadian National red or orange?
Author: Atsf814

Hello all;
Finally got around to working on a Canadian National Dash-9 project. Question:
After doing research on it some pics are bright red, some red, some a bit on the red-orange side.
Can anyone shed some light on the real color? Recent pics of the 8-40c's they just acquired look straight red. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks, Craig

One good thing about EMD was it used GM color codes. A lot of discussion has centered around this. I actually took a chip off paint off an old Gp 9 thsat was rusting out. I then took it to Home Depot and got a color matchy..It is real close to Chevy engine block red..

Everyone's perception of color is different, and CN's red-orange has always been difficult to nail down. When seen alone, a CN unit may look red, until placed beside a real red loco (like the CP unit shown). Who painted it, natural fading and exposure all affect how we see the color.

I'm sure others will add their own favorite model paint ref for CN red. I don't think I've seen two identical units unless fresh from the builder in the same batch!

It is identical to a Chevrolet color from the late sixties/early seventies called Hugger Orange. You may remember Corvettes and Camaros being painted that color.

CN has had many reds.

The red-orange #11 introduced in 1961 was very orange. This is often reproduced in paints.

In 1973, red-orange #11 changed and became much more red - even though the name did not change. This is rarely reproduced in paints.

The colours were fairly consistent across each class of locomotive but obviously even after a couple of months in service they varied enormously!

The colour now seems more fire-engine red than the red used 1973-1980s. I defer to some of the modern CN experts on the list to give the full details of today's colours.

I say download a bunch of photos of your chosen engine and just pick something that looks close to your eyes.

Yes, the color I'm referring to is the current color applied to the 2200's. I work for the company which is how I get my info. I'm not a CN fan so I'm not at all familar with what they used prior to this.

Interesting... I hadn't heard that before but in many images it appears to be bang-on:
