Model Railroading > Backdrop metamorphosisDate: 10/11/12 06:24 Backdrop metamorphosis Author: WrongWayMurphy One of the rooms in my model railway building has two deep aisleways with track on both sides.
When I built them I didn't give enough thought to backdrops and put up short pieces of sheetrock which was then painted, as seen in first photo. I was never happy with that so recently put up full height masonite down one aisle - see second photo. I'll get some artistic types in to paint clouds and the like and put all the buildings and scenic features back where they belong. Then after an open house event in November, I'll do the same with the aisle in the first photo. Big diff, dontcha think? Date: 10/11/12 08:59 Re: Backdrop metamorphosis Author: pilotblue Much better! Nice job. Hey, don't be afraid to do the clouds yourself, there is almost no way to do a bad job and its a lot easier than most people think.
Good luck, thanks for posting the photos. Date: 10/11/12 09:18 Re: Backdrop metamorphosis Author: P5r24 Where do you get the blue wall covering?
That is very cool and boy do I need some for my Pike, Gary Date: 10/11/12 11:09 Re: Backdrop metamorphosis Author: up833 Well...to my eye you have to much blue..height wise. I think I might try a very light blue at the top and blend that into your current blue color as it goes down to the track level. You would need to have both paints wet so you could blend them...I think a roller would do that ok. I dont think you do mountains so there isnt much to add to the skyline. Make big hills !
That said I believe you as the modeler should do what you like. You first photo isnt that bad as to the backdrop. Fill the slot with sheetrock. Date: 10/11/12 11:18 Re: Backdrop metamorphosis Author: bioyans up833 Wrote:

The sky color should get lighter as it gets closer to the horizon. Date: 10/11/12 14:41 Re: Backdrop metamorphosis Author: WrongWayMurphy P5r24 Wrote:

and much lower, but you're def making progress. Date: 10/11/12 15:55 Re: Backdrop metamorphosis Author: carbonglow Could you tell us what height and widths your decks are at?
Thanks Date: 10/12/12 13:00 Re: Backdrop metamorphosis Author: up833 The reason I suggested lighter on the upper was to have the effect of lowering the ceiling without having a sharp line of color change, You would be correct that in the real world darker blue for higher up but not sure how that would look in the room. Anyone with photos of that approach?

Width varies but averages 36" on lower, 24 " on the uppers Date: 10/12/12 18:42 Re: Backdrop metamorphosis Author: carbonglow Nice! Thank you.
