Kato HO P42 pre-production CAD images

This thing is going to be awesome. And yes, see-through radiator grills with no gear shaft blocking the view since everything is in the trucks.

Nice, though in real life you don't see thru the entire open area, as the air compressor and other components are located in this area.

I'm still not convinced that Kato's motor-in-truck will work in HO. Have to see it to believe it.

That really sucks that they are doing the bolted nose version with revised headlight opening as it really limits the model to phase V. I was hoping for Phase 3 down the road but unless Kato makes the older nose on a shell the unit will be wrong.

This drive is not brand new to this unit. It has already been out on some HO Japanese prototypes with reported success.

Watch this video on Kato's site and it shows one of the Japanese units.

Not just Phase V, they'll be able to accurately represent all the Heritage units with this version. No doubt those are in the works for the second release since the Athearn ones are sold out and frankly not all that great.

Yup. Hope they mold up some blobs to represent the air compressor and other intermals. That would be good, otherwise, you have a unit suited for the dead line - out of service!

Cheers,

I forgot about those but hopefully they make another body with the older style nose so they can make the P42's when they were new, I would also like to see P40 bodies but I doubt we will see those.

Im sure they will. Wont be hard to change the nose, headlight housing and hostler door in separate molds. They may see how these sell first.....so BUY UP!!

Forgive me, I don't keep up with everything. On the bolted nose, when did the P42's get this change? And are the rebuilt 800's getting this change?

I'd have to think that the internal modeling of air compressor and equipment would be in the works. The Genesis SD70ACe's, have those features. I'd think better than the RTR tunnel motors hopefully, which you can see the worm gear and all.

What is the sense of passenger cars for these? I'm guessing Walthers since Kato is missing any type of baggage car and Transition sleeper, since they only currently have Superliner I's available.

And what other changes would be needed for a P40? Didn't the rear window get blocked out for the rebuilds?

I plan to get 2 of the units from this run and if they do the reugular P40 in the faded strip and Phase 3 P42 I will get Several of those.

Walthers (Superliners, Heritage, and, via eBay, Viewliners).......and I would also suggest looking at the latest generation of Bachmann Amfleets.

So, is it safe to assume here based on the CAD images above that the Kato models will lack any and/or all pilot details front and rear? No hoses, cut levers, or HEP, same as the Athearn models?

Don't get me wrong, the digital renderings look very nice. The modernized nose inserts are a definite plus, but where are all the small details?? Windshield wipers? Side mirrors? Hopefully some final details just aren't present in the provided shots?

Robby, you are correct. These are early CAD images only. Spoke directly with them yesterday about the DCC and Sound models which will be part of the KOBO line with all detail parts installed at the factory along with either ESU Lok Sound or SoundTraxx DCC. DC versions at this point will NOT have the "included" detail parts installed as is standard with their non KOBO models.

I have high hopes these will be a success and I'm hopeful they will not be an operational flop like the SD40-2. If just one wheel were to get slightly dirty the whole truck could surge when going over frogs hence causing the unit to hiccup. I'm hopeful they have figured for this in continuity wiring to the other truck somehow so there is a "keep alive" factor. Similarly, I am going to go with the Lok Sounds as there is some keep alive in them as my Tsunamis hiccup at the slightes hint of dirty track or lengthy frogs. Just my two cents.

So those of us who refuse to pay 2x for our models just so we can have simulated sound will have some work to do? Might be a good thing....

Any ideas as to what these "included detail parts" are?

I generally like adding parts to RTR locos except when it comes to drilling holes for and installing grab irons...
