Walthers to do an SD70ACe
Author: nygiant

A short blurb in Model Railroad News says Walthers will offer an SD70ACe. A drawing shows the model with low headlight. No time given for delivery or price mentioned. Hope they do a better job than Bachmann.

From an economic standpoint I just cant see how a 4th platstic SD70Ace on the market makes any sense. IMHO Athearn's has the best detail, MTH has the best pulling power, and Bachmann is the Budget model. Will be interesting to see where Walthers will fall on the spectrum.

Obviously they should beat Bachmann but considering they stepped up their game lately i wouldnt be suprised if it was competing with Athearn Genesis and MTH.

It's going to be in their "Mainline" series, not top of the line Proto.

I too have to question this. I know lots of decisions just end up to be personal, but really, a 4th new/recent model of the same thing? Is there that much market share to capture?

Well...sure, we all need more Big Boys, Challengers, F units, NKP Berks, SP diesels, etc. etc. The hobby tends to do this - run 3-4 of anything that might be popular. Look at Branchline (Atlas) & Walthers.

Walther did a good U28/30B Why not continue on with late U30B's 33B's and 36B's?

I guess these companies carry out market research a lot ,but there does seem to be some odd decisions made at times. The requests (a lot of them here)for flared Rad SD70M's fell on deaf ears for a hell of a long time, yet we get multiple choices for F's ,SD40-2's, yada, yada.Regards,DK

Good selling locos sell out quickly before demand is met. The market is likely not satisfied so there is probably room for more sales of locomotives of the same design.

Atlas did the late U30B, while Proto 2000 did the earlier U28/30B in two variations (long and short side grills). I thought P2K had also done the U33B, but can't find any references, so I guess they didn't. Maybe I'm confusing those with the U30B demos, which P2K did produce. (The prototypes were rebuilt several times into U33B and U36B demo/test units.)

At any rate, it would be awesome to have the entire range of U-boats available in P2K or Genesis quality.

Right. I just wish either Atlas or Walthers would cover the range. Both are nice models.
