Centralia Shops ATSF Caboose Question
Author: Casselton

Can someone tell me how to take apart a ATSF Centralia Car Shops Caboose.    I would like to add interior and marker lights.  Generally there is a clue on how to remove the body, but it is very well constructed with tight fitting parts.   Very nice model with great detail.  I don't want to break anything.
Thanks - Mark
Houston, Texas

You put it VERY well.  Probably better to add these things to an Athearn caboose which comes apart easier. Oh, I know, you probably already did it.

So far I haven't tried anything.   It looks to be glued pretty solid!   Not even sure how to remove the couplers to add Kadee scale wisker couplers.

Although it's distributed by Intermountain, there is some sort of connection between Centralia Car Shops and Des Plaines Hobby in Des Plaines, Illinois. Their phone number is 847-297-2118. Maybe they can offer suggestions??

You'll destroy the car before you ever get inside. Definitely not worth it as these cars are glued together extremely tight.

They can be a PITA to find (even if in stock at IM), but they do offer an undec version..

From experience, it's normally easier to start with an undecorated version if doing major custom work..

Small chisel blade. Wedge between car body and frame and slide blade side to side to break up the glue.

It is difficult to determine where the body and frame are glued together.   I am going to call Centrailia tomorrow to get some advice.   I may try to find directions to the undercorated model.

That's a great looking cab. Was the safety slogan prototypical or their addition? I don't recall ever seeing that on a Santa Fe cab, just curious, not a slam.

I took a photo of my early 40s ATSF Centralia undec caboose.

The cupola is affixed to the car body the same as an Atlas cab. If you were able to squeeze and pop the cupola off, then you could reach into the car body and push against the floor, and hopefully the frame should pop out.

I'm more curious of what type of caboose you're building in the background??

BN bunk cars made from out of service caboose, late BN era. Note the style and placement of the air conditioners, there's also bunk or heater vents along the side. For some reason BN had stopped using the module on the flat car idea. Interesting kitbash.

BN Univan or bunk car. I had cut the windows out for a CBQ cab then changed mind, filled windows and plated over. Next is new walkways, propane carriage, rigging and dcc interior/porch lights
