The new Broadway Limited Paragon 3 Union Pacific fully restored #4014 in a side by side challenge of the MTH Proto Sound 3 Union Pacific #4012. Their challange is to overcome the 1.5% grade of Ranger on the Texas & Pacific RR.

The perfectly synced drivers on the BLI is enough to drive a person bonkers...

FYI the MTH had a couple of eccentrics that were binding... corrected that issue and now the MTH is just as smooth has the BLI.

How did the 2-10-4 do compared to the mallets?

the MTH engine has a more realistic smoke generator and better sounds, at least for me. Thanks for sharing.

You know I had never noticed that... I guess I focus more on the sound... which does go in and out of sync. Great catch!!! Neil

I just did a quick test with the first 25 cars of the BB test and a T&P brass Hallmark caboose. So that is 25 cars and one caboose which is at the edge. Now most of those cars are heavy to be at the head of that long train... could work it up to 30 cars if those heavy reefers were not there. Thanks for the question! Neil

Yes the MTH only has one pair, the BLI has 2 pair.

BLI in general have better whistles, but MTH has by far the better chuff and smoke effects. I had their cab forward and the sound was amazing.
